Pitchfork: You recently faced a backlash after saying that you don’t vote because ”there’s something else out there pushing the buttons.” How did you interpret that whole situation?

Kendrick Lamar: I’m a person of my own opinions, that’s how I was raised. I speak what I feel. The world is bigger than us, and I’m the only person that said that. A lot of people feel the same way but they’re scared to talk. They’re really scared of the truth— they only want half of the truth. I’ve been living like that— forever in fear— but I know what to say and how to say it now. I ain’t scared of myself. Y’all may be scared; I’m not scared.

I’m never gonna get it, but I always wanted a tattoo that says: “This is my tattoo.” I told my mom that and she flipped the fuck out. Right now, I have the ghost and the star from Super Mario on my left arm, and then on my right arm I have a Bible scripture that says, “For what has a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” On the back of my arm I have a dove… peace and shit.

Guess What NYC?: FRANK OCEAN’S Performing the ATP 9/21!

The NYC All Tomorrow’s Parties I’ll Be Your Mirror Festival has confirmed an exciting addition to its lineup: Frank Ocean. The Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli curated the festival, which takes place September 21-23 and was moved to Manhattan’s Pier 36 from New Jersey. The Afghan Whigs recently covered Frank Ocean’s “Lovecrimes”, which can be downloaded below.

Frank Ocean will perform on Friday, September 21. Also added to the Friday lineup are Hannibal Buress, and Edan, plus a special “hanging guitars” show from Lee Ranaldo. (Ranaldo will also perform with a full band on Sunday.)

Ocean was previously scheduled to be in Europe opening for Coldplay during the ATP New York dates, but he recently canceled his European tour.

The lineup also includes Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the Roots, the Antlers, Philip Glass and Tyondai Braxton, Hot Snakes, Dirty Three, Lee Ranaldo, Jose Gonzalez, the Make-Up, Hot Snakes, Thee Oh Sees, Mark Lanegan, Scrawl, Emeralds, Janeane Garofalo, Lightning Bolt, Chavez, Braids, Blanck Mass, Demdike Stare, DJ Jonathan Toubin, and more.

In KREAYSHAWN NEWS: For Those Who Care…..

Kreayshawn will release her full-length debut, Somethin Bout Kreay, this summer. A video for the project’s lead single “Breakfast,” featuring 2 Chainz, is expected for next month. The odd couple have worked together before, on “Murder” from 2 Chainz’ T.R.U. Realigion mixtape. The video for that collaboration, long teased, remains unreleased.

Somethin Bout Kreay will feature production by German dance DJ Boys Noize, “Gucci Gucci” architect DJ Two Stacks and AXE spokesperson Diplo. Of her decision to hire the producer, Kreayshawn told Pitchfork, “I know Diplo knows a lot about underground music culture… He was one of the people to put me onto music like that when I used to listen to the Mad Decent Mixes. It was like, Oh, he knows what I want.’”

THE RETURN OF EARL SWEATSHIRT-OFWGKTA:

Earl has, at long last, been freed. Earl Sweatshirt, the long-MIA member of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, played his first concert alongside the rap collective since the group’s mainstream ascent last year. 

Hours after conducting an interview with New York’s Hot 97, the 18-year-old MC — who disappeared from the group last year after his “Earl” video became a viral hit — joined Tyler, The Creator, Hodgy Beats, Domo Genesis and the rest of the OF gang at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Tuesday night (Mar. 20). According to Pitchfork, Sweatshirt came onstage midway through the group’s set and ran through songs like “Orange Juice,” “Kill” and “Earl.”

Later in the show, Odd Future-affiliated crooner Frank Ocean also hit the stage and performed “Goblin” standout “She” alongside Tyler. The show reportedly ended with a posse-encompassing rendition of “Oldies.”

The performance celebrated the release of “The OF Tape Vol. 2,” out Tuesday on new label Odd Future Records. The group’s new Adult Swim show, “Loiter Squad,” was previewed at the concert, and will premiere on Sunday (Mar. 25).
