Gabby Douglas: I Nearly Quit Gymnastics to Work at Chick-fil-A!

Around this time last year, Gabby Douglas dropped a bomb on her coaches and family: She wanted to quit gymnastics – and maybe try getting a job at Chick-fil-A.

"What," she says now, "was I thinking?"

Of course, she didn’t. And the rest is history.

Four months after becoming the first black woman ever to win Olympic gold in individual all-around gymnastics, Douglas, 16, is looking back on her magical year – one that includes a new memoir Grace, Gold, & Glory: My Leap of Faith, to be published Dec. 4, and excerpted exclusively in PEOPLE this week.

"My life has changed so much," says the bubbly former PEOPLE cover girl, who spent the morning before Thanksgiving chilling with her big sister, Arielle, 23, in her sweats and chatting with PEOPLE in her midtown Manhattan hotel. "It’s been really fun."

GABBY DOUGLAS: ‘I’m Living on Cloud Nine’ After All-Around Win

On her way to the women’s all-around competition at the London Olympics – arguably the biggest meet of her life – Gabby Douglas had a good feeling.

"I was on the bus and it was raining and I thought, ‘It’s going to be a great day,’ " Douglas, 16, told PEOPLE on Thursday after winning the all-around gold medal. “My mom used to tell me when I was little, ‘When it rains, it’s God’s manifestation, a big day’s waiting to happen.’ “

"I texted my mom, ‘It’s raining. You know what that means.’ "

And a big day it was for the gymnast dubbed “The Flying Squirrel,” winning the most coveted prize in her sport. It comes just two days after she took home the team gold medal alongside Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Kyla Ross and People.com blogger Jordyn Wieber.

GABBY DOUGLAS Wins ‘ALL Around Title’! Congrats!

LONDON — Might be time to get Gabby Douglas a new nickname.

Olympic champ might work.

Known as “The Flying Squirrel,” Douglas won the women’s all-around title Thursday night, becoming the third straight American to win gymnastics’ biggest prize. It’s her second gold medal of the London Games, coming two nights after she and her “Fierce Five” teammates gave the United States its first Olympic title since 1996.

Douglas rocked the O2 Arena with her electric floor routine, flashing a dazzling smile and lots of pizzazz. She finished with a score of 62.232, about three-tenths ahead of Viktoria Komova of Russia, runner-up at last year’s world championships.

Komova’s floor routine was impressive, as well, and she stood at the center of the arena staring intently at the scoreboard. When the final standings flashed, her head dropped and she hurried to the sidelines, tears falling.
