Last week, actress Ashley Judd was put under fire after an excerpt of her new book, All That is Bitter, and Sweet referenced hip-hop as a ‘rape culture.’
“As far as I’m concerned, most Rap and Hip Hop music—with its rape culture and insanely abusive lyrics and depictions of girls and women as ‘ho’s’—is the contemporary soundtrack of misogyny. I believe that the social construction of gender—the cultural beliefs and practices that divide the sexes and institutionalize and normalize the unequal treatment of girls and women, privilege the interest of boys and men, and, most nefariously, incessantly sexualize girls and women—is the root cause of poverty and suffering around the world,” Judd writes in All That is Bitter, and Sweet.
The actress expressed her disapproval of Aids organizations hiring Diddy and Snoop to perform at events. Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, 9th Wonder, and Questlove among others spoke out via Twitter and questioned Judd’s actual knowledge of Hip-Hop culture.
I’m a Pop Star!…Pop Star!!
December 21, 2010 was a special day to me because it was the day that David Banner & 9th Wonder finally dropped the jewel “Death of a Pop Star” & it superseded my expectations! Banner nixed being a pop artist & stayed true to his hip-hop roots with mind-provoking messages intertwined in every track. The lead single “Be With You” featuring Ludacris & Marsha Ambrosius is complemented with a charismatic video that can entertain the toughest critic. Many people are exclaiming that Banner is “bringing something FRESH” to Music. Although, I agree; I have known this since his first major release “Mississippi: The Album. You feel his passion behind each & every song. The emotion will make you shiver & nod your head in agreeance. I can go on & on listing some of my favorite records from Banner; but I’ll stick to D.O.A.P.S: “Diamonds On My Pinky” & “Stutter” featuring Anthony Hamilton are my picks! 9th Wonder’s production speaks volumes & it spoke loudly on Death of A Pop Star. This collaborative effort was genius & it’s a must have for anyone’s collection. It’s a conscious album…I dare you to stimulate your mind! I dare you!
“….bang, it’s the same damn thang. Boys clubs closing while they building PF Changs. –D. Banner “Diamonds on My Pinky”
